I’ve been training and coaching church planters for many years! I really love helping church planters to start new churches. But today I’ve decided to change my message to church planters.

Starting today, my message is:

Don’t Plant a Church!
Don’t Start Worship Services!
Start Making Disciples First!

You can watch this video to better understand why I’m telling church planters not to plant churches!

Here’s what I want to say to those who want to go start worship services and start a church in a new community: Don’t do it! Don’t plant a church!

Don’t make that your goal. You see, I work with a lot of church planters and it seems like the focus tends to always be on: What’s the worship gathering going to be like? and, What’s the venue? and, Where are we going to meet? and, How are we going to find a worship leader? and all the details and all the focus is consumed by how are we going to start worship services.

And I just want to say to you: Don’t start worship services! Instead, start making disciples!

Take your team, train them, equip them to be disciplemakers. Do what Jesus called us to do. Begin by making disciples, and make disciples who will make disciples, and then gather those disciples together and send them out to make more disciples.

After you’ve baptized new believers, and after you’ve trained them to make disciples, and after you’ve multiplied Missional Communities of disciplemakers engaging those in the culture around them with the message of the gospel… then, and only then, why don’t you think about starting worship services?
