Advent is a wonderful season of the year. The word actually means “the arrival” and is particularly linked to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. This is known as the first advent. After Jesus’ death and resurrection, Christians around the world are anticipating the second advent – the second coming of Christ. Our family has celebrated Advent since our children were very young. My wife created an advent tree and each day the children would hang an ornament on the tree after reading several verses of Scripture and answering a few questions regarding Christ’s arrival. Since we have two children, our son would hang the ornament on the odd days and our daughter would hang the ornament on the even days. It was a special time of preparation for our celebration of Jesus’ birth.
When I work with church planters it seems they want to talk about the vision that God’s given them to plant a church.
There are plenty of books about discipleship and about Christian living. Likewise, there are plenty of books about the church, about leading groups, and even about church planting. There are very few books that are about all of these things—and how the pieces fit together.
This isn’t a surprise. In many churches, baptizing is reserved for the clergy. However, nowhere in the New Testament do we see instructions or restrictions that limit who can baptize.
