Jesus commanded His disciples to make disciples — which includes “teaching to obey.” How do you teach to obey all that Jesus commanded?
Jesus didn’t say teach all that I commanded. He told them to teach to obey.
It might take years to teach all that Jesus commanded. It takes a lot less time to teach to obey all that Jesus commanded.
I think Mary is a great example to follow in John 2.
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
That’s what teaching to obey looks like. Help people understand this:
Whatever He says to you, do it!
That’s it! Obedience is simply doing whatever He says to do.
So teaching to obey looks like this – helping people to recognize and do what Jesus says to do.
“Just do it” didn’t start with Nike – it is right here in John’s Gospel in the words of Mary.
Obeying Jesus and teaching others to obey Jesus is central to disciplemaking.
Today’s Missional Challenge
Whatever He says to you, do it! And teach others to do it too.
