The Nature of Church Planting Movements

I’m fascinated by church planting movements. Today I had the opportunity to share over lunch about some of their characteristics that have been observed in countries around the world. One of the important factors in movements is… a radical obedience to Christ.

This is often a missing characteristic in Christians in America. They have not committed themselves to full and complete obedience to Christ’s commands. (In fact, many churches today tolerate disobedience.) Disobedient Christians are an obstacle to the advance of gospel movements. Consumer Christianity has replaced a Christianity characterized by disciplemaking.

In conversations with Christian leaders, I’ve discussed many reasons why we don’t see church planting movements in America. And yet I long deep within to see God moving in America like I’ve seen Him moving through Empart in India and around the world.

The Nature of Movements

David Garrison describes CPMs – “A rapid and multiplicative increase of indigenous churches-planting-churches within a given people group or population.” (Church Planting Movements)

David Watson adds – “A strategy and equipping process that establishes a replication process (DNA) in new leaders and local churches within a people group so that they are rapidly and regularly planting multiple new churches within the same people group or mega-city as a normal part of being and doing church. These churches also begin to look outside their own ethno-linguistic groups ”

That’s what I hope to see in America. When I moved to Seattle in 2008, I dreamed in my heart of partnering together to help fuel the rapid multiplication of churches in the Seattle area. It seems that God is working to allow me to join Him in seeing that dream start to become a reality.

Over the coming months, we are initiating a research project of evangelical churches and church planting activity throughout the metro Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area. It is our prayer that the Church of Jesus Christ will be energized by the Holy Spirit to partner together to see the rapid multiplication of disciples making disciples and churches planting churches!

Following aspects of the DAWN Strategy, we envision mobilizing the whole body of Christ in the whole region in a determined effort to complete the Great Commission by working towards the goal of providing an evangelical congregation for every town and neighborhoods of every class, kind and condition of man.

Our vision is to catalyze strategies that bring research and prayer, partnership skills and the vision of completing the Great Commission through an aggressive commitment to starting new churches by making disciples so that “ the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” (Hab 2:14)
